Land — The First Domain of the LAKADA Wellness Design Standard

Not a survey pulled from a drone photo. A walk — slope by slope, checking where water actually moves after rain, which trees have stood long enough to matter, where the ground is firm and where it isn't. This happens before a client meeting about the programme, before a single sketch.
Here's why it comes first: everything else on our list depends on it. You can't decide climate strategy without knowing which direction the site actually faces once your account for the slope. You can't decide where a guest arrives without knowing where the land naturally draws the eye. Skip this step, and every decision after it is built on a guess.
One decision these changes: On a sloped, sea-facing site, a conventional approach flattens the ground to make construction easier — cheaper, faster, and it erases the very feature that made the site worth building on. Reading the land first means the building steps with the slope instead of against it. The construction is harder. The result is a place that couldn't exist anywhere else.
This is the domain most often skipped, because it's the hardest to shortcut around later. A bad material choice can be fixed in a renovation. A building placed wrong on its own land rarely gets a second chance.
Next week: Climate — how the sun and wind decide a building's shape before a single finish is chosen.
