Climate — Deciding the Shape Before the Finishes

Climate Shapes Architecture Before Design Begins.

Climate decides the shape of a building long before a single finish is chosen.

In tropical architecture, especially in the Philippines, the sun's path, prevailing winds, rainfall patterns, humidity, and solar heat gain are not secondary design considerations. They are fundamental forces that should influence how a building is positioned, shaped, and experienced.

Which walls receive the harshest afternoon sun? Where can natural breezes enter and move through interior spaces? How can roof forms, building orientation, shading devices, and landscape work together to create comfortable environments?

These questions should be addressed at the earliest stages of architectural planning.

Yet many projects approach design in reverse.

The building layout is often determined primarily by the view, visual appeal, or desired architectural expression. Thermal comfort becomes a problem to solve afterward, usually through mechanical cooling, additional insulation, or corrective shading.

While these solutions can improve indoor conditions, they may also introduce higher operational costs and unnecessary energy demand.

A climate-responsive building takes a different approach.

It considers environmental conditions from the beginning, balancing desirable views with solar protection, natural ventilation, daylight, and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.

For wellness and hospitality architecture, this becomes particularly important.

A guest's experience of comfort is influenced not only by beautiful interiors but also by the quality of daylight, the movement of air, the temperature of surrounding surfaces, and the ability to connect with nature without excessive heat or glare.

Good architecture should not constantly fight its environment. It should intelligently respond to it.

At LAKADA Design Atelier, we believe climate responsiveness is not simply a sustainability feature. It is a foundation of human comfort, environmental performance, and meaningful wellness experiences.

We design with the climate before we design the finishes. Not after.
