Careful harvesting and treatment processes are key to ensuring bamboo’s durability and safety in design and construction projects. Selecting and Harvesting Bamboo


The first step in bamboo architecture is choosing the right bamboo species and harvesting it at the optimal time. Not all bamboo is suitable for construction, and timing affects its strength and longevity.


  • Species choice: Guadua angustifolia, Bambusa oldhamii, and Phyllostachys edulis are among the most commonly used species for construction due to their thick walls and height.

  • Harvest age: Bamboo culms should be harvested between 3 to 5 years old. Younger bamboo lacks strength, while older bamboo becomes brittle.

  • Season: Dry seasons are preferred for harvesting because bamboo contains less moisture, reducing the risk of fungal attacks and insect infestation.

  • Cutting technique: Use a sharp machete or saw to cut bamboo at the base, leaving the roots intact to allow regrowth. Avoid damaging nearby culms.

Initial Bamboo Treatment

  • Smoking: Traditional smoking methods expose bamboo to smoke, which acts as a natural insect repellent and adds durability.

  • Lamination: Bamboo strips can be laminated with adhesives to create engineered bamboo products. Laminated bamboo offers uniform strength and can be shaped for various architectural designs.

  • Surface finishing: Applying natural oils or sealants protects bamboo from moisture and UV damage, preserving its appearance and structural integrity.

Incorporating bamboo into construction requires understanding its unique properties and limitations.


  • Joinery: Use traditional lashing, dowels, or metal fasteners designed for bamboo to ensure strong connections.
